Fellow GLMBies, do we need a new rule?

The way I see it, a problem has arisen here which we had not considered before. One of our mem(e)bers has adopted an avatar which some of us find distracting and offensive. There's nothing in the rules against using this, but maybe there ought to be.

Thoughts?

Ha--love your taglines!

I haven't seen the avatar, so my POV isn't worth much, but I guess you're looking for others to help you form a consensus so that we can write Joe? Can you contact the person via email?

If you mean John's boob avatar, Sparky,

1) It isn't so distracting that I haven't been able to take the time out to post to you. I can't speak for everyone though; Osea hasn't been able to repost, possibly he is transfixed. biggrin.gif

2) Breasts aren't offensive.

3) Again, if it's John's, you should be more concerned with his notions on language.

LOL avatars make strange bedfellows. Thanks for your support (pun intended).

I always thought avatars were meant to project some sort of self-image. Dictionary definition: Computers . a graphical image that represents a person, as on the Internet.

Wow, always thought John was a guy.

Change the avatar? Na, chip in a buck each and buy her a turtleneck. (Hey, what about the legs?)

Long time ago, I took out a Russian gal who would make avatar gal seem flat-chested. One day when she was wearing this tight-fitting knit sweater, we were walking down the street and we bumped into the last person whom I would ever wat to run into--the parish priest who had never seen her before. He took one glance at her, rolled his eyes, and then looked at me. "Hope to see you in church Sunday," he said, scurrying away. And, I moved just as quickly in the opposite direction. An embarrassing moment or just a moment in the life of a human being?

I would hope we wouldn't need a rule. I would expect that good judgment would prevail, but failing that, gentle hints would suffice. So, failing both of those, a formal guideline does seem appropriate.

I have the right to go to any strip joint, anywhere, anytime, and ogle and drool as long as I want to. But common sense and simple courtesy compel me to consider it somewhere between tasteless and wholly inappropriate to get up on the strippers' stage and discuss grammar from dusk till dawn. mellow.gif

Of course not. But there is a time and a place for everything. I feel that this is not the place for this.

John is a guy. This is why some of us find his avatar disturbing. For a woman to use this picture would say "This is my self image." For a man, it says "This is how I think of women."

Not necessarily, but I wouldn't fix my eyes directly between her breasts either, and I'd appreciate it if she didn't shove them in my face.

Have you never seen a man staring at a woman's breasts and heard her tell him "My eyes are up here"? If a woman chooses to display herself in revealing clothing that is her right, and I don't mind that the woman in your avatar has done so. But for a man to shove this image in our faces, as it were, is disrespectful.

And that's the thing, John. If your avatar was actually obscene, I'm pretty sure we could do something about it. I don't consider it obscene, though I do consider it inappropriate, just as a bikini is fine for the beach, but would be a show of disrespect if worn to church, or, for that matter, to school or to the office.

As it's only something we find offensive, I suppose all we can do is ask you nicely to change it. Either you care about our opinions or you don't.

I suspect that you don't.

Um...The mayor of my small town here in Oregon is definitely a guy named Stu, but he also has a pair of breasts. Some people don't much like that, but I'll tell ya, he looks pretty good in a miniskirt with legs that even my wife envies.

Different strokes for different folks.

On the topic of the avatar, I personally don't care one way or the other. Yes, I find it inappropriate for this site and perhaps disrespectful to women. But on the other hand, there are few avatars here that are as revealing as this one.

Claws does not and has never frequented those kinds of places, he hastens to add. happy.gif What he means is, placing a Hooters restaurant "Queen of the Fleet" on this site is not unlike two opprobrium-challenged politicos sneaking into the opposite party's Presidential convention, wheedling, conniving, and wangling a way to the speaker's platform, and then mooning the audience. Go to your own party's convention and curse the opposing party all you want to from your own platform, 'fer crimeny's sake. dry.gif

In my neck of the woods, it (bagged) is slang for "going out with" or "engaged to" or "married to." But the word also carries a connotive meaning that suggests the male got the much better end of the deal--almost as if he had hit that elusive once in a lifetime jackpot.

In short, the lady's a gem. (That lucky stiff bagged a beauty.)
