I play jazz (bossa nova = specialty) and hits/standards from the '20s on-up on a classical guitar, whose name is "Charlene" in honor of the late jazz guitarist Charlie Byrd. Charlene is my mistress. Charlie was my mentor. I love "good" music, both playing it and singing it.

I also love wiener dogs, MLB (the Texas Rangers), college football, NFL's Houston Texans, biography and history books, all kinds of grammar books and style manuals, national parks, state parks, nature trails, digital photography, speed-walking in the early a.m., deer-spotting, this new-again grammar site, words, writing funny stuff (well, I think it's funny), my wife, Volcano Lips (Judy); daughter, Cuticles (Becca); and son, Nails (Drew). (I'm "Claws," you see.)

I'm an experienced, long-of-tooth copy editor and can spot typos through pea soup, in the dark -- as long as they're not mine.
