I can't find the spelling on this word. This is from the Jalna series I am listening to. It has been brought up several times. In this last one, Renny wanted to "squeeze the weezen out of Bell." Any ideas?

Any ideas? Grins, Diane So you're asking for the official spelling of a made-up word? Oh, here's what you're looking for: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2226...;gid=2226053057 -------------------- "Gladly wolde he lerne, and gladly teche." G.C.

I hadn't thought it to be made up. I thought it was a Canadian idiom from the 30's or 40's. I thought maybe someone had heard it before.

Well, I wasn't quite happy with those explanations, as it is hard to imagine squeezing wheezing out of someone, so my online search led me to:
Boston medical and surgical journal, Volume 87 By Massachusetts Medical Society, New England Surgical Society, digitized by Google. I'm not sufficiently adroit to copy the article here, but it states that "...The sallow, wheezen look of the natives of the northern states of America, is thought to be due to the indigestible preparation of Indian corn." Perhaps this is the wheezen being referred to in Walte's book? 30 further minutes of my searching in online medical dictionaries came up with no definitions for "wheezen", so perhaps it is an archaic medical term. ujay |
